System Hierarchy and MSI Selection

Use the system hierarchy tree to define the systems, subsystems, subsubsystems and parts that will be considered in the MSG-3 systems and powerplant analysis. The systems and subsystems are added from a predefined list that is the same for all analyses in the same repository and can be maintained by an authorized user (Home > Manage ATA Chapters).

When you select an item in the system hierarchy, a panel at the bottom of the Properties tab displays the maintenance selection questions from the MSG-3 guidelines. You can answer the questions only for the lowest level item(s) in each branch of the hierarchy and then the answers automatically roll up to the higher level items.

When an item has been marked as a Maintenance Significant Item (MSI), you can perform a functional failure analysis (F-F-E-C) and apply the failure effect categorization/maintenance task selection logic for the potential failures that are identified. An item will be marked as an MSI under the following conditions:

  • It is a system, subsystem or sub-subsystem. Parts cannot be flagged as MSIs.
  • It is the lowest level (above part) in its branch of the system hierarchy that has a "Yes" answer to at least one of the MSI selection questions.
