Analytical Fault Tree Diagram

A fault tree diagram follows a top-down structure and represents a graphical model of the pathways within a system that can lead to a foreseeable, undesirable loss event (or a failure). The pathways connect contributory events and conditions using standard logic symbols.

BlockSim’s RBDs and fault trees can be configured as analytical diagrams or simulation diagrams. In the analytical (or algebraic analysis) approach, the system's pdf is obtained analytically from each component's failure distribution using probability theory. In other words, the analytical approach involves the determination of a mathematical expression that describes the reliability of the system in terms of the reliabilities of its components. Once the system's reliability function has been determined, other calculations can then be performed to obtain metrics of interest for the system.
